Im sure you know what a w**k is but that is not where the slang yank origanated from. The expression Yanks came about during the first world war (I might need a little help here) from what I have been told by my father, Yanks was short for Young American National Kadets (this may have been Navel Kadets) remember the film staring James Cagney singing "Im A Yankee Doodle Dandy" The endearing term YANKS is a US term not thought up by us Brits. despite what you might read on some of the pages here at H2G2 we don't don't think you are a bunch of w*****s, we know we all are a bunch of w*****s, The only people in the uk who don't w**k are the the Royals (why do you think they always look so misrable)they don't fart either.
