The Little Car That Could

1 Conversation

One doesn't often hear of automobiles with fascinating histories. Among enthusiasts, auto history can become a fetish, requiring one to know when what model was introduced and what changes were made each year thereafter, especially fun facts about engines and all that.

While the Volkswagen Beetle has plenty of fun facts for the enthusiast to memorize (eg. years featuring the split rear window, when engine displacement increased to 1500cc, what makes a Super Beetle "Super"), the little car's story is fascinating for any old reader.

Ferdinand Porsche had been involved with automobile design for a while, toying with air-cooled, rear-mounted engines and such.

Adolf Hitler's One Good Deed was throwing his support behind the Volkswagen concept (Volkswagen = People's Car). To Hitler, the beauty of the idea was its propaganda value.
