Retold Fairy Tales Worth Reading

Rose Daughter by Robin McKinley
This version of Beauty and the Beast is retold very well, and Robin McKinley adds her own personal details and humor to the story. If you happen to like Rose Daughter, you'll like Deerskin, also by Robin McKinley, which is the story of a girl, after being raped by her father, who must recover from amnesia (perhaps self-imposed) and come to terms with herself after this traumatic experience. Again, it is very well-told.
Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
This version of The Wizard of Oz turns everything you thought you knew about Oz upside down - the Munchkinlanders struggle with temptation and religion, talking Animals are subjugated, the Cowardly Lion is a victim of scientific experimentation, and the Wicked Witch isn't perhaps so wicked or even as witchly as we thought. The plotline is fascinating and I honestly could not put it down. And the block prints before each section in the book are very well-done *artist spiel*.
The Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire
Yet another retold fairy tale by Gregory Maguire, this time it's the story of Cinderella, set in 17th-18th century Holland. It gives perspective into the lives of the supposedly "evil" stepsisters of Cinderella, who, while ugly enough, aren't actually evil. Both Wicked and Confessions are well worth your time.
