Mongooses are the most common kinds of small predatory mammal in Africa. This is a Banded Mongoose, Mungos mungo, photographed by my cousin Jaco in the Potgietersrus Nature Reserve. Mongooses are delightful. This kind lives in small bands, usually between ten and twenty. They are tamer than the other kinds, and quite curious. They stand up on their rear legs like this to better make out what's going on. They make all kinds of weird noises: little grunts and chirrups and chittering noises. There are often lots of babies of different ages in the bands.
