To the Earth

We travelled moonwards, concentrated
on our task: locating landing sites.
But I looked back and saw you.
Earth, fading into darkness,
as if about to leave.
Against the empty black of space
your colours glowed,
lit by some internal life.
Cobalt blue, wisped and curled with white,
marbled with bronze and green.
“Down there,” I thought, “is home,
precious.”
