I live near Rickmansworth! And when I read Hitchik for the first time there were no cafes in Rickmansworth. smiley - sadface But they have one now. smiley - smiley I wonder if there was when it was written or if Douglas Adams was just writing about Ricky because he was board!

I think thats the idea, think of a place thats nowere and declare it a speshial place. ever see Whups Apocalips? yest funny, and in one of the books they have a picture, Medium, Rare, Welldone, and in small letters it has, some small town in the UK "Worlds super power", and "Latest invention Boe and Arrow".

Not far from Watford, the ford over the Wat. Sort of everywhere and nowhere baby, is Rickmansworth, prob named after a hayrick builder who was worthy, whereas most of them rarely got out of the pub, and when they did, built damp ricks that stood a good chance of heating up, drying out and catching fire - thank goodness they were all well tanked, plenty of pee to put the thing out!

Aerobic composting, plenty of azobacteria, very fast process, but you have to watch the volumes, aeration and hydration. Critical mass - dry your hay enough first, but not too much and build them on concrete toadstools so the rats can't get up in them. Great places for children to play in, fall out and break a leg, as well keep warm and make love when in the right company.

Rickmansworth, defintiely an area of hayricks in the past, don't see them much if at all today, mechanical baling and lactic fermentation (silage, those ugly plastic wrapped bales) seems to be the thing today. Very clever that, but again, conditions inside that wrap have to be right, effectively an anaerobic process, maybe somewhat longer, but it certainly preserves the hay, and maximises the proteins form that spring grass - all clever stuff.

Will the Universe ever have a place called Silagemanworth or Blackplasticwrappedanaerobiclacticfermentationmanworth?

Probably not!

ah, but those who know, know that Douglas was doing what many mystics have done in the past - teasing us. the real centre of the universe is Croxley Green (which is not far from Ricki).

I know this, cos my friend Ant is the drummer for the unfamous trio, Mr Weston & The Ironing. & he lives in Croxley with a big lion in his front room and a puss called Rosie..

I'm afraid I cant say more...smiley - winkeye
