Pokemon Emerald Walkthrough V (Slateport)
Created | Updated Oct 5, 2012
On the way you will see an abandoned ship, more on that once you get HM Surf. You will be dropped off on the sandy Slateport beach where there are plenty of battles to be had. Talk to the kids making a sand castle to get the soft sand, a held item that will improve the power of ground moves. While you are here you will see the adorable azurill a few times, although you can't get one yet here are some stats.
Azurill
Normal type (?), as the name and appearance would suggest, azurill is a baby marill. Unlike marill and azumarill, azurill is a normal type, not water so use fighting moves when battling and not ghost ones like astonish because they will have zero effect. Azurill's moves are stuff like splash, bubble and water gun. While not being much in battles, azurill make a huge splash (no pun intendid) in cuteness contests. Azurill are produced when breeding two marill while the female is holding a sea incense (found on mount pryre). Azurill evolves with happiness.
At the end of the beach nearest to the town, you will find a beach hut. Inside, there are three or four trainers with an assortment of water and normal type pokemon (including an azurill). Beat all of them and the owner will give you six soda pops. After this the guy will sell you a soda when ever you want. You have to buy them individually and it takes a while to do, but it's worth it! Soda pops are cheaper and more effective at healing your pokemon than a super potion so stock up while your here!
Welcome to Slateport! There's lots to see and do in this hustling bustling city, There's the market where you can buy expensive vitamins for your pokemon and, once you find the Secret Power TM, there will be stalls selling Items for your secret base (more on that later too). There's also the pokemon fan club. If you take a pokemon you've raised a pokemon for a specific contest (you wont be able to do that untill you reach Lillycove), and it has a really high stat (e.g. cuteness), the chairman will give you a scarf that will make that stat even higher if you show the pokemon to him. Also, if you show the girl at the back a pokemon that totally loves you she will give you a soothe bell to make your new pokemon love you too, (your starter MIGHT be happy enough by now but if not just come back later). Also in the fan club you will find a reporter, tell her about your first pokemon on your list and the report will get on TV (most houses you wander into will have TVs in them and you can watch them). I usually answer these questionairres with my eyes closed so i can see what random rubish i've said when i watch it.
North of the fan club will be the name raters house, those who have played earlier games will know that all raters do is say "ooh that's a nice name" and then hellp you change it. If you want to give your pokemon original nicknames and forgot to when you caught them, then take them here (i had a zubat named bluebotttle here :)). Renaming your pokemon is another way to get onto TV, also you can't change nicknames of pokemon you got in a trade.
The final stop on our sightseeing trip is at the north-west (top left) corner of slateport, where the pokemon contest used to be. It's the battle tent! A fun new tournament for pokemon trainers, all three battle tents (here, fallabar and veranturf) have original rules and the one here is that you can't use your own pokemon! At the start of the tourament you rent out three pokemon of your choise and pit them out against three other rentals, pay attention to the pokemon you battle because at the end you will have the option to trade one of them for one of your own rentals and, for some reason, it won't tell you what their moves or special abilities are. As in all the battle tents the end prive really sucks but, whatever, i guess just a bit of fun (it IS a video game remember).
While your'e sightseeing you may notice that the museum is blocked off by team aqua grunts (yes, you have to go in there too, sorry) and it will be untill you go into the harbour (big building, no door, you cant miss it) and talk to Dock, the guy on the first floor looking at the blueprints. He will tell you to take them to Captain Stern. Go back outside and, sure enough, the grunts have all gone into the museum and so can you. It costs 50 (insert units of money here) to get in, which, considereing the cost of a pokeball is 200, adds up to about 50p, hope you can afford it. Talk to the grunt in front of you as you enter and he will reveal himself as the one from petalbourg woods. Despite that, he will give you TM theif and go.
Thief is a weak move so don't teach it to any of your team, instead catch a bannete or dustox later in the game and teach it the them. Theif is a move that, aswell as doing a little damage steals the foes held item (wild pokemon or otherwise) as long as the user isn't holding anything. So it's a good idea to use it in occasional battles, you never know what you might find <ok>.
Go upstairs and make sure your pokemon are fighting fit before you talk to the capt. there are two battles coming up. As you hand over the devon goods, two grunts will walk in and demand you hand them over. Battle the first one and you will get a taste of the pre-evolved form of my favourite water pokemon! The pokemon is the pirrahna like, caravanna (what is that, like a caravan fish <erm>?) it doesn't know many water moves but it's also part dark type and knows crunch so if you have a ralts at this point keep it away, it will get slaughtered! Caravanna also has a rather unique special ability, rough skin, that does a little damage to the enemy when it uses physical attack (like tackle and bite, any move that involves making contact with the opponent basically). Caravanna is one of the only pokemon that is harder to find then its evolved form, caravanna are only found in one river while its evolved form sharpedo (yep, that's my favourite water type) can be found on any ocean route with a super rod.
After the battles you will briefly meet the team aqua boss (don't worry, you don't have to battle him yet) who will be angry, tell you off and grumpily leave without his goods (sounds SO wrong...). Stern will thank you and you can be off for your next destination.
That's all for this section!
