Greek Myths - Perdix
Created | Updated Jan 28, 2002
When the craftsman Perdix was pushed from a high tower by the jealous Daedalus, the goddess Athene turned him into a partridge, so as he would survive the fall. This, presumably was easier than turning the ground beneath him to thick moss, or a big net. Or inventing the world's first bungee with the supernatural attachment of some elastic to the boy. Ah well. Perdix's loss is our gain. For now we have partridges. Which always fly low. As though they've just been pushed from a tower, plunged to their doom, suddenly been given an entirely new body shape, and had a very strong impetus for suddenly learning about wings and their uses.
