Again ?
No I will always come back to this beautiful and nice subcontinent(This Akronym was given to me by anIndian Policeman in Dehli).
I think for europeans and Northamericans the culture shock at the beginning of your journey is the hardest point of the whole time in India. I have found a good possibility to avoid this shock:

GOA

The best starting point for your India-Experience is Bombay (Mumbay).
You should NOT visit the city, but take a direct flight or Taxi to Goa(Panjii)(A Taxi will cost around 6000 Rp [jan 2000]). The Taxi Tour will take something about 1 Day and will slide you in a very soft manner into the indian culture. I spend my first week in arambol/Goa which is a very nice fishingVillage in the north. After relaxing on the sunny beach, you can start to go into deeper journeys in India. After the nice cristian goa, You should try Gokarna/Karnataka, where you will find nice hindhu-people in this village, and there is one of the beautiful beaches in all India: the Om-beach. You must see.
After this stations, you will have a good understanding of the indian culture, for exploring more of this great country.
Some Hints:

no. 1: Look for your luggage!

no. 2: Look for your luggage, really do it every second.

no. 3: Do not buy ANY souvenirs in the first two weeks, you will see anything anywhere, so first get a feeling for the money you want to spent.

no. 4: Carry your money on your body at anytime (except swimming of course)

You will have great fun when you travel to india and follows this hints. It is the MOST beautiful country in the world.
