British politics sure were more interesting back then! This Charles fella sounds somewhat like Robert Mugabe. But Bob's probably going to be more difficult to get rid of!

Nice entry, Happy. Glad you finished it, and congratulations on getting it accepted.

Nahh, I don't think old Charlie was all that bad. Who did those those upstart Republicans think they were, anyway? But old James (first of England, fourth of Scotland) with his self-serving speech might have given Chas some delusions of grandeur. He should have been more careful. Shoulda kept his head. Anyways I think Liz the first was a good old gal. What do you think is going to happen to the British monarchy from now on? Whose gonna be the next, and what's it going to be like?

Charles wasn't that bad at all prior to the war he tried to compermise with Parliament - not blocking the exucution of his friend Earl of Strafford and signing the 'Tria-annual Act'; which required the monarch to call a Parliament at least once every three years. By contrast Cromwell went on to use the Army to suppress Parliament in 1653 and then appointed a system of Miltary Goveners throughout the country and used the Army to administer his will.

As for the monarchy today most people are not intrested one way or the other - with the attitude 'if it aint broke why fix it'.

Erm, yeah ... but isn't the monarchy perhaps broken? I mean, whose going to be the next king? Charles? Will that not make everybody laugh? Or William? Does he even wanna? Forgive me, I know nothing about what is really going on in Britain except the b******t they put in newspapers and tabloid magazines. What's the real score?

And what is your next Guide entry going to be about?

'What's the real score?' mmmmmmmmm..........tricky, but I'll try.

I personally have no problem with the monarchy in its present form, the Queen acts according to the values of the age in which she grew up which is a bygone era; when Charles & William take there turns at wearing the crown I think we will move to a more open European approach to the monarchy. In particularly with William who I feel will move towards the Scandinavian modal.

I do not see us moving to a republic, the monarchy is a useful check/balance in our governmental system and a great profit earner for the nation. The main Constitutional problems here are reform of Parliament (moving to a representative House of Lords and a Commonen's elected using some form of proportional representation) and the transfer of power to Europe.

Interesting article, Dude.

Although it comes some time after the end of what is known as 'The English Civil War', I was thinking that it was worth mentioning that it was parliament (or at least members of it) who first offered O Cromwell the crown, which he refused, and then, in the absence of a strong leader, and partly out of fear of the army, invited Charles II to return from exile in Holland and reclaim the throne.

The officers of the New Model Army often acted on their own agenda which was at odds with parliament's intentions. I'd say that crucial institution of restoration society probably merits a full article to itself, to be honest.

I'll leave the hard work up to you, though, you seem to have a bit of a knack for it! smiley - smiley
