One of the first and most popular anaesthetics, ether was also a favourite abused substance in the latter part of the nineteenth century. A liquid that vaporises at body temperature, ether is typically drunk with plenty of water chasers. Belching amongst ether consumers is to be greatly encouraged, as a build up of the vapours can cause a heart attack. Belching too close to an open flame is not recommended for obvious reasons.A4492
