h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

I'd like to offer this Entry on one of the most influential bands of the Eighties for possible inclusion in the Guide. The Smiths split 13 years ago, yet they retain an amazingly strong cult following.
When researching the Entry, I was amazed at the amount of material on the Web about the band and their singer/lyricist Morrissey. I've therefore been able to include links to a few sites that I'm sure any of the band's many admirers would find very interesting. I enjoyed writing the Entry, and I've already had some positive feedback about it. Hope you like it too!

This is a nice article, my only major grumble is with the layout in two key areas.


The first is that the main body of text appears to be a little long, making it easy to lose where you are in the text. Instead of using the tag, it would be a good idea to use paragraph tags to help break it up into manageable chunks. Subheader tags would also be useful in separating up the text, and it also gives the opportunity to put in relevant headings.


The other is with the footnotes. Ideally, footnotes should go in before the sentence or other punctuiation is closed. in other words:

The Smiths¹. is acceptable

whereas:

The Smiths.¹ is not

Thanks - those tips have helped a lot. I have put all your advice into practice, and made a couple of minor amendments to the content of the piece. I've used the obvious but, I think, effective device of using Smiths song titles as subheaders to break the text up a bit. If you take another look, I hope you'll agree that the Entry looks much better now.

Very good work. Perhaps something needs to be said about The Smiths' influences on music and musicians?

Hmmm... I have explained why The Smiths were so different from other past and present bands and that they were pretty much the definitive indie band. Do you think that needs further expansion? After all, one can really only speculate as to how much one band might or might not have been influenced by another.

I think you're right, there's enough detail in there already. If people want more information then they can use the links you supplied.
