Game Maker - Computer Games Creation Software

What is it?

Game Maker is a simple to use Computer Games Creation package, which is easy to use because of its drag-and-drop interface. You can make impressive 2D games with these functions, but for greater control there's GML (Game Maker Language), a powerful, built-in programming language, allowing you to make anything from a paint program, to a 3D online RPG.

Basic overview

Although GM is powerful, it is also slow when lots of objects exist at the same time. 3D support is also pretty limited, and often slow, so if you want to create a 3D First-Person Shooter, you probably want to try something else. However, if you want to make a 2D game, this is a good choice. The program is shareware, so it's free to use. However, to unlock advanced features and remove the 'Made with Game Maker' logo, you need to register. This is pretty cheap: $20, e15, or £10, but you can do without it if you're not sure.

Game Maker is available from gamemaker.nl, along with example games, resource packs, and a buzzing community.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
