Betelgeuse

Really BIG star in Constellation Orion. Is known as a Red Giant, which means that it is due to explode very soon. In fact it has already gone supernova, but the light-show won't be seen on Earth for a few decades yet, because of that annoying problem of light having a finite speed.

Anyway, the only "intelligent" lifeforms in or around Betelgeuse are the Dblllzzzifecks, and it is well known that they had a problem. You see, in Dbllzzzifeck years, the star was due to burst in the year 1,000,001 and unfortunately all computer systems on their planet were only able to cope with six-digit years. On top of that the Dblllzzzifecks had carried out an economic agreement with a neighbouring star system and they were due to convert to a new currency in 999,998.

It's a pity we didn't know about this one earlier, as some of the inhabitants knew RPG and COBOL and all....
