Blatherskite has made a point that we should make every effort to keep things simple at first and assume that the questioner is a non-scientist until there is evidence that they require a more in depth explanation. I think we have been doing pretty well although maybe we sometimes forget and go off on one too soon. He said this on the 'Can I be a sexpert'thread:

I think you are dead right. So many people might offer something useful from an outside sphere, but not if they are scared off by jargon.Trouble is if you always speak to the less informed (like me) you could lose the people who understand. Respect can be a hard thing to work with.
