Fowey

Pronounced (Foy), situated on the south coast of Cornwall (56 miles beyond Exeter on the A30, and 12 miles south) this small town has strong links with Daphne Du Maurier who lived in several properties in and around the centre of town. Anyone who has read (Jamaica Inn, Rebecca or Frenchman's Creek) can recognise that she received a great deal of inspiration from the wild coastline and picturesque landscape. Tourists are welcomed all year round, but especially in the Du Maurier Week, with many special events held.

The town can be used as a base, from which to visit St Austell, Lostwithiel, Charlestown, with Land’s End and the Lizard only a couple of hours drive away. Parking can be a problem in the town centre, but a large pay-and-display car park on the outskirts is a good option. The Safe Harbour public house has a good atmosphere and serves beer brewed locally, also The Ship, The King of Prussia and the Working Men’s Club. The Toll Bar does simple bar snacks as well as a sit-down menu, and has a terrace with views of Polruan. Also Sam’s fish restaurant, and Chinese at Taipan.
