Hi there, whiteout!
As with many things in life, it's usually a good idea to spend some time learning more about a place before diving in to volunteer.
A good start would be write about yourself some on your personal space. 
And if you're interested in being a scout or sub-ed at some point (for I see you've posted there, too), it would be a good idea spending some time getting involved in PeerReview and learning how the Edited Guide works. Writing an entry yourself is another great way to start!
