Is it true that it is easy to confuse Guildford with a planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betlegeuse? What is Woking like? Tell us all about it!

When I used to get driven to wokr from Guildford we would pass a house called Betelgeuse every morning. I think it was in Normandy rightly, but close enough.
Oh, and Woking, what can you say about a town with a Martian War Machine and a Jet Fighter in the town centre? Ummm ... very little actually.

Bluebottle Posted May 10, 2002
So, its actually supposed to be a Martian thing, not merely a peice of modern art that looks like one?
And what type of jet fighter?

It is, Lizzy.
Guildford has a ruined castle keep, surrounded by award winning gardens, and a modern cathedral which is much nicer inside than out.
There are pleasant walks along the River Wey and the rolling Downs and leafy lanes are easily accessible from the town centre.
However, many of us are still smarting from being passed over for City status in favour of Preston.

She lives in Preston? I'm sure it has as good reasons as Guildford to gain City status, but the rumour going round here is that they have a Labour controlled Council
*slaps wrist for listening to gossip*

Guildford was up for City status? I should think so too with a Cathedral & University & all (Wait a minute, I thought only CITIES had Catherdrals?) I will allway's have a soft spot for Guildford. (Esp a grotty little shared house in Canterbury Road where I lived a lot of my student days )
The Plane on a stick is a jet. It has a bit of a wing missing (So it doesn't hit a nearby building)
The Martian was intended, there are even engravings of Bacteria, Viruses and the like on the Ground around it
Woking won World in Bloom Last Summer . I know there were quite a few floral display's etc, But I'm not quite sure how we managed that!

I didn't know that Toccata.
It is the second time Guildford lost out, in the Millenium, I think Brighton got the honour.
We used to go to Fantails regularly. I see its now a bar.

Munchkin Posted May 13, 2002
There are some pleasent pubs in Guildford such as the White House by the river. Sadly Woking lacks any. So, being foreign as I am, where else is worth visiting in Surrey?
Talking About Surrey
Coniraya Posted May 13, 2002
Fantials used to be in the Peacocks centre.
Rather a lot of Surrey pubs are getting to be a bit chi chi. The Red Lion on Shamley Green is nice, but gets crowded. The Volunteer, Sutton Abinger the same and a pub meal for 4 there can come to well over £100!
National Trust properties are nice to visit, most of those sell wine with food.
Denbies Winery, Dorking is quite fun. They are terribly proud of their people mover through the exhibition. It goes all of 50 yards!
Don't forget Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures. Both have improved dramatically over the years.

Don't think Munchkin'll do rollercoasters
Nope, still don't remember Fantails what was it
I like the Jolly Farmer between Guildford & Woking, Wonderful food, and not bad prices for round here. Trouble is the have this habit of closing early during the week

Coniraya Posted May 14, 2002
I don't dp rollercoasters either, but I love watching those less fearful for their spines shreiking and yelling!
Fantails was nightclub opposite and to the left of the booking kiosks. The area has been opened up to form a bar now. It is getting on for 10 years ago now that I last went there.

Ahh a nightclub I have been hanging round here since '91 and am proud to say I havn't been to any of the night clubs in Guildford or Woking. Pubs on the other hand..........
The bar up by the Cinema is called Auberge now, the few times I've been in there, I've found the staff grumpy & the drinks expensive

It is the Surrey County Show on 3rd June. We shall be going as usual and not just for the pint of Pimms which is my reward for walking to Stoke Park from our house
I love seeing all the animals, they are shampooed and brushed to perfection. My favourites are the Charolais cattle, South Downs (they have lovely woolly faces) and Gloucester Old Spot pigs. If its a warm day, it does tend to get a bit whiffy around them though!
