SLR is an abreviation for Single Lens Reflex. It refers to a type of camera where the same lens exposes the film and with the aid of a mirror1 forms the image seen in the viewfinder.


Today most SLRs have a pentaprism so that the image seen in the viewfinder is not reversed2.

1Hence the word 'reflex'2The image formed by the lens itself is upside down and backwards. The mirror flips the image along the horizontal axis and the pentapris fixes things left to right.
