1843.
A year of clashes. A year to make a difference in the ecclesiastical set-up of Scotland. A year of martyrs, a year of hatred and a year of complete devastation. As well, a year of hope, a year of change, a year that would make legends.
The Disruption
That year was the year of the Great Disruption, when about 40% of the ministers of the Church of Scotland, mostly Evangelical rather than Moderate, walked out of the General Assembly and started the Free Church of Scotland. They were led by Thomas Chalmers, who would later be viewed as a giant of the 19th century Christian scene.
