Memoirs of an Infomad
Created | Updated Mar 27, 2005
Born, bred and educated in Liverpool, I left the city in the late 70s, along with 30% of my generation, as an economic refugee because we weren't talented enough to be a rock star or footballer.
After living and working for a year in Manchester, I left England and spent the subsequent 20 years as one of the growing tribe of Information Nomads. In periods ranging from 3 months (Grenoble) to 10 years (Darmstadt) I lived and worked in several countries in Europe, and for short spells in the USA and northern Thailand.
In the early days of the new millennium I returned to my home town from Germany. Unfortunately Liverpool, while recovering from its decades of deprivation, provided few IT jobs I was either capable of or interested in pursuing.
However, I heard on the Infomad grapevine that, across the water, my Grandmother's home town of Dublin was booming. So, packing my bags once more I set sail for the Fair City.
I fell in love with Dublin on a bright winter Sunday morning and spent 4 unforgettable years there. I made good friends and wanted to stay, but it was not to be.
In June 2004, the rising costs and the dearth of decently paid and interesting jobs drove me to Belfast. Now, comfortably ensconced on the bank of the Lagan, I am gainfully employed as a Technical Author for a Software House, studying at the Open University and working on my own interests in the design of human/system interfaces and the mobile internet.
