High Fidelity

Book by Nick Hornby about a middle aged man desprate to discover why he was dumped by various girlfriends. Made into a film that loses a good deal of the plot's darker, more savage edge - a subplot where a character is partially responsible for another's near rape is dismissed with a gag - but Stephen Frear's direction and John Cusack's script and acting make it a good film with some cunning joke casting. There's also a brief homage to "Vertigo", which was brought about by bad weather on the day of filming.
