Vardy Hunting 02 - my emails

After reading the text of that speech, I emailed the LEA that the Emmanuel College is covered by. They declined to comment, as the way the college is funded means that it answers only to the DfES. This is my email to the DfES:

Sirs,

Were you aware that Steven Layfield, the Head of Science at Emmanuel College, Gateshead, is actually an avowed anti-scientist? That he has given direct advise to other Science teachers on ways to promote Creationism (a purely faith-based position promoted by Fundamental Christian organisations that also actively campaign to make homosexuality illegal and to completely ban all abortions) in Science lessons?

To pose as a Science teacher and then promote anti-science positions that have absolutely no supporting evidence as truth is tantamount to fraud. It is my opinion that this man should be brought to task for his actions, and the parents of his students advised of his beliefs before he can do any further damage to the education of Gateshead children.

My evidence? The text of a speech he gave to fellow teachers:

I have attached the full text of the lecture (it's 10 pages), but there are two key sections you ought to read:

"As we stated at the beginning, Christians, with very good reason, reckon the Scriptures of the Old & New Testaments a reliable guide concerning just what we are to believe. They are not merely religious documents. They provide us with a true account of Earth history which we ignore at our peril. Many who parade as competent scientists today are unwittingly asking the same question which Satan first uttered back in Genesis, 'Did God really say...?'(3:1)"

And:

"May it please God to raise up a new generation of Scientists who are duly respectful of their Maker and who, recognising the limitations of human scientific enquiry, give full weight of respect to the statements of propositional truth of Holy Scripture - being the authoritative Word of God."

These are not the words of a Scientist, they are the words of an anti-science preacher!

Even if this man is no longer Head of Science at Emmanuel, searching questions ought to be asked of those who appointed him as well - did they knowingly appoint a Creationist, or did he decieve them as to his beliefs? It is vital that people like this are not allowed to undermine British education, before we end up in as bad a state as certain American states.

Sincerely,
