Together with its companion play, 'Stand Up Nigel Barton', are the most autobiographical of Denis Potter's television plays. They explore Potter's feelings of loss of identity as he moved away from his working class roots in the Forest of Dean, and on to the Oxbridge educated middle class life as a writer with the BBC. Particularly his feelings that he was in between, and not accepted or respected by either camp.
