Why will this forum be down from the morning of the election until the following morning, whereas the embargo on the press finishes when the polls close at 10 pm?

Just a general question before anyone else asks it. I think I already know the answer but just for clarification.

And of course, the forum will be re-opening, UN-moderated, from the morning of Friday 6th May.

I'm sure some people will be nursing hangovers of either celebration or mourning, depending on their own views and the outcome of the polls!

As I thought lazy slobs. And all you have to do id flick the switch, or push the button.

Having been up since 4am on 5 May I will still be facing at least 4 and more likely at least 5 more hours at work at 10pm on 5 May. smiley - smiley

Having checked this thoroughly, several times, I think this fits into the new guidelines.

....and of course some of us, soon as the results are announced will be making a beeline for the nearest airport to emigrate.

Do you Brits always vote on a Thursday?

Some of us don't vote at all. But yes.

Master B said 'Electioneering! Edit him!'

I did not mention the candidate or constituency I would be in on the day. Nor the party I am supporting. not electioneering just saying how the election would be affecting me. Isn't that the point of this forum. smiley - winkeye

Doesn't the fact that we all know your allegiance and constituency count?

Er...'scuse me? Not "everyone" knows DD's alligience. I didn't....

Out of interest, why do us Brits vote on a Thursday in particular?

Dr E Vibenstein (You know it is, it really is.)

"And of course, the forum will be re-opening, UN-moderated, from the morning of Friday 6th May."

Are you expecting such a shock result that you'll be calling in the services of the UN to moderate the forum? Blimey! smiley - biggrin

>>"Out of interest, why do us Brits vote on a Thursday in particular?"

There is no reason at all, other than the fact that we always seem to have done so since the 1930's. There's an explanation here:
http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm199798/cmselect/cmhaff/768/768ap07.htm
smiley - spacesmiley - space "There is no statutory requirement for a parliamentary election to be held on a Thursday."
smiley - spacesmiley - space "The historical reasons for choosing Thursday as the normal day of polling are no longer clear. General elections from 1918 until 1931 were held on various days of the week, but Thursday has been the favoured day since 1935."

Maybe politicians are the only people who actually *can* get the hang of Thursdays?

But then again a lot of them can get an awful headache on the Friday following elections.

I don't know seems kinda logical
Thurs :- vote
Fri :- endless arguments and demands for recounts in all the marginals
Sat/Sun:- consumption of vast amounts of alcohol to celebrate or drown
your sorrows
Mon:- normal service resumes and we all go back to complaining about
whoever's in power

Key: Complain about this post
