Upon further reflection, I have substantially changed the tone of this piece. My apologies to those who liked it the other way.

"have the states hold a popular election, then the candidates receive electoral votes based on percentage" always seemed like an reasonable compromise compared to the winner takes all aspect - certainly sounds like it would reduce the impact of Florida.
It would be interesting to see the a quick math comparison - how many EC votes would obama, mccain, barr and mckinney recieve with such a system, in comparison to this years (eventual??? is Missouri close enough for an automatic recount???) outcome as it stands.
One groovy indication of how weird the EC is - Obama could have something like 8 percent (hang on... 8.6% in fact http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/11/obamas-electoral-cushion.html)less of the vote in EVERY state and still have won the EC vote.
Thats a fun fact that is...

This is good Is there any way you could get rid of the tables and use nested bullets instead, for the sake of the mobile/pda version of h2g2?

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

I cannot hold a slithe togue
Or ride a flying Llama
But the Electoral college cast their vote
The winner is Obama

the US Congress certified the results of the Electoral College vote
on 7 January,2009 giving Barack S. Obama 365 out of 538 Electoral votes.
McCain won 21.8 States to Obama's 28.2
Nebraska was divided as stated in the article.

Just above the subheader on third paries you will find this sentence
Maine and Nebraska are the exceptions and in 2008 it appears that Nebraska will split its Electoral Votes four to one.
this needs to be changed to past tense.
Maine and Nebraska are the exceptions and in 2008 Nebraska split its Electoral vote (McCain=four Obama=one).
