The Line 6 Variax 700 electric modelling guitar
Created | Updated May 12, 2008
Production of Variax guitars began in 2003, through to the present day, although over this time the exact models, and specification of the models has changed/varied somewhat.
The Variax 700 electric guitar is a custom-crafted model in the Line 6 Variax guitar line, with a carved-top ash over mahogany body, a one-piece maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, bone nut, pearl inlays and Gotoh machine heads. The guitar has 22 medium profile frets and a 25-1/2" scale length, with a 10" fingerboard radius.
The bridge, which also holds the guitars pickups, is a Custom Baggs Tremolo bridge. The guitar has a Standard quarter inch guitar output jack, although, if used in conjunction with the provided guitar cable, running from the powered footswitch, this can also provide power to the instruments internal electronics. If the guitar is not powered by the external footswitch method, there is an internal compartment on the gutiar (accessible from a covered compartment located on the rear of the body. This battery-compartment contains a 'pack' for insurting 6 AA batterys (providing approximate 12 hours play time), but the pack itself can be disconnected from the guitar revealing a battery clip to which a 9 volt battery can be attached (providing 1 or 2 hours play time max).
In addition to the quarter inch standard jack socket the guitar has a Digital I/O jack for connection to Vetta II amplifier. This digital conectivity socket is covered by a protective rubber cover, and is located immediately above the quarter inch jack socket.
The controls on the guitar are both simple in layout and use, these are a standard volume control, single tone control, 5-way stratocaster style pickup selector switch, and the rotery knob which allows for selection fo the differnt banks of guitars. It is this final knob which reveals the modelling capibility of the guitar, as this selects between various 'modelled' guitar sounds; efectivly from this control in conjunction with the 5-way selector one can select any one of 25 acoustic, electric and electroacoustic guitars.
Guitar modelling was first pioneered by Roland with the VG8 system- whereby a special six-way pickup able to fit your own guitar, was employed. The Roland VG8 and VG88 combine guitar modelling, amp modelling with effects, whilst the line 6 Variaxrange limits itself to guitar modelling.
The Variax guitars use a separate pickup for each string, though unlike the Roland modelling guitars these are integral bridge-mounted piezo transducers rather than a narrow magnetic pickup. This feature of the Variax, gives the guitar one of its distinctive appearance features; that of having no visible picups on the guitar body. One huge benefit of the piezo transducer pickup system is that they are not susceptible to radiated hum and interference from transformers and computer screens in the same way magnetic pickups are. This is a hugely benificial feature particularly for those wishing to perform computer-based recording from the Variax- opperation of the guitar is really extremely quiet unless other devices, amplifiers etc are themselves generating a lot of background hum.
