A Conversation for Talking Point: Why is Reality TV so Popular?
Cheap TV

In a non-reality TV programme, actors and actresses are paid obscene amounts of money per episode (or so I've been told). In reality TV, the costs of production still remain, but the actors are free, except for the winner who goes home with a large sum of money, and that sum is probably nowhere near what an actor would charge per episode.
Still doesn't explain why the public likes it so much, though.
