The Differences between the English and Welsh Legal System and the Northern Ireland Legal System
The Northern Ireland legal system is different. English and Welsh solicitors may practice in Northern Ireland but are considered overseas solicitors and have to follow Northern Ireland laws. Solicitors in Northern Ireland are regulated and represented by the
The Law Society of Northern Ireland.
In 1998 the Good Friday Agreement was reached and endorsed by a referendum. A new Northern Ireland Assembly was created and legislation to implement the settlement was passed.
At present legislation applying to the whole of the UK is applied to Northern Ireland, with exceptions for acts that apply primarily or exclusively to Northern Ireland.
In Northern Ireland “terrorist” trials have no juries.
