R100 Personal Robot

This is currently (24th May 2000) a prototype project being operated by NEC's boffins in Japan. Their design philosophy is revoloving in creating something completely new, a friendly interface between people and cyberspace. The R100 is capable of recognising human faces and voices, can wander around its surroundings without bumping into things and can link with televisions, PC's and other domestic appliances. Currently is great advantage is that it has a permanent internet link and so can be given orders remotely, but it is hoped that it will eventually be able to tutor children and be a companion for the elderly.
