Rats

In addition to other entries on rats, I too want to say what excellent pets they are despite the image many people have of them. They are the rodent form of dogs. Love human company, come when called and are rather partial to the back and head scratching. I have never wanted a pet and not had one since in my teens but due to other life circumstances decided i did want a pet and wanted a rat. An animal that I could build a relationship with but that wouldn't be so dependent if I went away overnight or was not feeling too great.
He's perfect. Unlike hamsters and gerbils it is VERY unlikely ever to bite. Mine merely licks my hand. He's made such a difference to a dedicated non-pet-owner!!

Great with children and adults alike - you can't buy a better small, cheap to maintain pet than a rat.
