Biography
Early Years
Avatar has very little recollection of his birth parents since they were killed by drow warriors when he was five years old. He managed to escape and was adopted by a merchant and his family in the local village. Although he had nightmares for several months, time succeeded in blocking the horrible memories from Avatar's mind. This forgetfulness allowed him to have some resemblance of a normal childhood. When Avatar's magical abilities began to manifest themselves at the age of thirteen, he was driven out of the village by frightened, angry townsfolk with nothing but the clothes on his back and a satchel that he had with him at the time. Avatar fled to the woods and soon lost. After a few days with little to eat and stream water to drink, Avatar was found by a group of wood elves who took him in and gave him a place to live. The elves taught Avatar how to live in the woods as well as their language and how to use his magic. Avatar and the elves loved one another and the elves did what at the time seemed to be a great favor, they used their magics to give Avatar eternal youth. Once Avatar reached maturity his body would continue aging but it would be almost imperceptible. The ten or so years that Avatar spent there were among the happiest of his life.
Avatar left the elves sometime after his twenty-third birthday. He became somewhat restless and wanted to see the world around him. He asked the elves for permission to leave and upon recieving their consent, thanked them warmly for their all they had done for him and vowed never to forget them and to aid as much as he could whenever they asked As a farewell gift, the elves gave Avatar a staff that they had enchanted to bring him good luck and safe journeys. Avatar once again thanked them and bade them farewell.
Wandering Years and Love
Once Avatar left the elves, he seemed to keep getting drawn into different sets of difficulties. Once, he was mistaken for somebody else and was nearly forced into marraige before managing to prove that he was who he said he was. Another time, he was finagled into helping a farmer plow his fields after drinking from a stream on his property without permission. Avatar didn't really mind these things, he had no set agenda and what happened to him always seemed to work out in the end. But then things changed. Then, he found love.
While Avatar was wandering, he encountered a lovely young woman known as Sandra Downs. She was the daughter of the Robert Downs, a wealthy farmer who had been widowed for some years. Avatar and Sandra met while Avatar was working on her father's farm to make some money. For a while all was well, until the truth about Avatar was revealed.
For several years Avatar lived happily with the Downs family, even becoming engaged to Sandra, but Robert eventually noticed that Avatar did not seem to be aging and demanded to know why. Avatar, in all innocence, told Robert all about how the elves and how they had given him near eternal youth. Robert, who harbored a deep dislike of elves, magic and for the most part anyone except normal humans, saw what had happened to Avatar as an abomination and and threw him off his lands despite Avatar's and Sandra's protests. On top of that, he went to the surrounding villages and told them about Avatar and slandered his name to all who would listen. Avatar was darkly furious at Robert's actions but was comforted when at the last moment Sandra left her father and decided to go with Avatar.
Avatar and Sandra began wandering again and, although homeless, were happy. They eventually came to a new village where his name had not been sullied and built a house and began to raise a family. Things continued happily for many years until Avatar's near immortality resurfaced. Avatar and Sandra loved each other dearly but over the years she became older and more frail while he seemed to be just as youthful as ever. Eventually, she died and the loss devestated Avatar. He saw his immortality as a curse rather than a gift twice tried to commit suicide, both times prevented by the interference of the townsfolk. In the end, Avatar began wandering again, trying to find something to fill the void in his life created by Sandra's death.
Grief and Anger
Avatar once again began wandering, driven on by anger, rage, and most of all, grief. Anger at Robert who forced him and Sandra to leave the farm, anger at the elves for giving him immortality, and anger at himself for loving someone. He had nothing but the clothes on his back, his staff, his satchel and a katana that Sandra had bought for him for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Those who met him during this time often saw a depressed, sullen man whose eyes contained almost infinite sadness. He was no longer the optimistic, inquisitive traveller or the kind, loving husband that he once was. Instead he was bitter, cynical, and cold. He became a sellsword and a bounty hunter, selling his talents to whomever was willing to pay him the most money. But despite all his anger, there was still a small part of him that remembered happier times with the elves and later with Sandra. This small piece of Avatar's soul is probably what kept him from going completely insane during those dark times.
Finding Purpose at the Monastary
Avatar eventually happened upon a monastary located in Imardin. He had recently finished a job and was starting to become weary of killing for profit. Being as night and a thunderstorm were both fast approaching, he decided to ask the monks if he could stay there for the night. The monks graciously allowed him to stay there for the night and gave him fresh food and water and a soft bed in which to sleep. Avatar was surprised by their generosity but chalked it up to the fact that they were monks and that that was what they were supposed to do. Avatar went to sleep fully intending to leave the next morning. He stayed there for six years.
Avatar never intended to stay at the monastary, he just never got around to leaving. The monks saw through his callous exterior and helped Avatar to find a purpose in life. Over a period of some months, they got Avatar to reveal who he really was as well as his history and, to Avatar's surprise, they accepted him. When they learned that he possessed magic qualities and was immortal, they merely encouraged him to use his gifts with care and responsibility. They also told him about the Magicians Guild in Imardin as a place to hone his talents and devote his energies. Avatar was fascinated by all that the monks knew and the wisdom that they possessed. He stayed there and soaked up their knowledge and aided them however he could, be it helping in their gardens, assisting them as they made copies of books, and even aiding them in translating some elven works into human toungues.
From the Monastary to the Magicians Guild
After learning all he could at the monastary, Avatar felt it was time to move on again. He went to the abbot of the monastary and asked him for his blessing and told him of his decision to go to Imardin and join the Magicians Guild. The abbot gladly did so and wrote Avatar a letter of reccommedation to take with him on his journey. Avatar took the letter and left for Imardin and the Magicians Guild.
Life as a Magician
Avatar has only recently arrived in the Magicians Guild and has not done too very much. He has begun his training to become a scholar and now, although he now has a purpose, hopes to one day find true happines once again.
Update: Avatar has now been promoted to the rank of novice after the second Battle of Imardin.
