Something About Guitars

My first guitar was a spanish nylon-string. I think everyone starts this way. There is not much to say about it, my Dad bought it for my sixteenth birthday. It sounds no big deal, but it´s an alright instrument.
My first electric axe was a used Fiesta Red, maple-fingerboard Japan Stratocaster. I fell in love with it in a shop in Munich, because I saw Mark Knopfler play one in his Sultans of Swing video. And this is my favourite song, so there was no way around, and I went to work to get the money. I don´t know what it is about these maple-necks, I just LOVE their look. Pitifully, they don´t play too good, because the glossy finish gets sticky with sweat. After I got it, I had to replace the single-layer pickguard, because it was totally bent from sunshine exposure or some other heat. I chose a triple-layer one, since Mark had one of those.
The next one was a black Les Paul Studio with gold hardware. Damn heavy thing, but good, chunky sound! Again, I bought it used. Too late, I realised that the headstock had been broken off and glued to it again. It was no good bargain, since I definitely paid too much... But no matter, it is a great instrument. I like the slim neck.
When I was on a trip to Miami, FL in the summer of 1994, I was direly behind a 1954 re-issue Strat, which had come out for their 50th anniversary. They cost 6000 DM in Germany, and I got hold on one in a music store on Long Key. I paid no more than 2700 DM in the end! Whew, I can tell you I was glad! :-) Again, maple fingerboard, sunburst finish... ahh! Sunshine of my life! I´ve never heard a sound so bluesy and yet so crisp! The neck is FAT!
Next Guitar was a red Hohner Headless Bass. Somebody had replaced one pickup with a Bartolini one, and I got the crappy whole thing for 200 DM, less than the pickup´s value. Good deal, as far as that.
Lately, I got myself a Fernandes Sustainer for super cheap, although new. That´s a funny Instrument to play tricks on. Plays easy, I like it. But the pickups sound so acoustic... strange. Might have to replace them.
My Girlfriend lately got herself a used Cheri. This is a real easy-to-play-speedaxe! I use it most :-) because it´s so cool. But she lets me get along with it. This babe produces metal!
So, greetings go to all guitarists all over the world, and especially to my teacher, Rüdiger J. Veith, greatest axe-man in the whole universe (no matter how many fingers you have, he´s faster!) He´s cool! Visit him on http://www.musicsupportgroup.de
