Philosophy is the art of taking credit for stating the obvious. As such, philosophers can be said to be those rare individuals intent on proving to the world that everyone else is oblivious to the obvious but them.

For example, Descartes said, "I think therefore I am." No shit, Sherlock.

It is said that after Plato, all philosophy is a footnote. That's because Plato wrote down a number of very obvious things in a clear, unequivocal fashion.

Another early philosopher, called Diogenes, was wont to run around masturbating in public to demonstrate his contempt for popular opinion.
