HIP's - Home Information Packs

I wonder if the general public have been made aware that the majority of local solicitors will prepare a HIP for free - you only pay for the search fees. Certainly the national conglomerates charge a fee and estate agents, who try to tie you into their favourite conveyancer for the referral fees they receive, tell their selling clients that there is a fee to pay - often £500 or more. Please can the true position be advertised fully in the public domain?
