I don't get the tree diagrams. Why not just read them in post order like a sane person? Does anybody really click on the reply button for anything but the last post?

Yes. It's a tool that is useful if you learn how to use it. If you follow it, it stops people missing the last thread on a page if a simpost means that the page turns over, plus lots of other benefits.

Wouldn't just making sure you read all the posts before going on to the next page be easier, or am i just being really stupid?

If two people answer post 19 at the same time, the one who does it slower and gets number 21 might not realise that post 19 was the one that was answered. Or something.
