In 1977, a Man named Terry Fox was diagnosed with Osteogenic Sarcoma(bone cancer) and he was forced to have his right leg amputated. Now he had an artificial leg to walk on, and soon to run on.
There were many people who got cancer then, and there are still many who get cancer now. Terry Fox wanted to change that. While he was in hospital, he decided he would run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His journey would be called The Marathon of Hope.
Terry trained for 18 months running 5000 kilometres. Then, on April 12, 1980 in St. John's, Newfounland he started running.
Terry ran through Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario. But when he was in Thunder Bay, he had to stop running because the cancer had spread to his lungs.
Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981 at the age of 22.
But he was not forgotton.
The next September, the first Terry Fox Run was held. Over 300,000 people walked, ran or cycled in his memory. That run raised $3.2 million.
Many people know someone who has suffered from Cancer. Because of Terry Fox, that may change.
