Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Yay!

Note to sub-ed: don't forget to change the link to 'The Ethical Decalogue vs the Ritual Decalogue', which has also just been picked from PR.

Hi Giford, I've been given your controversial entry (judging by this PR thread) to sub-edit. You can find the result here: A31699308

Just a question, because I have no possibility to check this: is it really 'menchildren' and 'firstfruits' in the quote, amd passover uncapitalised?

Hi Bel,

The short answer is 'yes'. The quote is taken from the King James version - that's how they translated it, menchildren, firstfruits and small-p-passover and all.

Obviously it was originally in Hebrew, which (at the time) didn't distinguish capital letters and where every word has a gender (like French - so you can't say 'children', only 'sons' or 'daughters'), and where some words don't translate directly into English.

So yes, someone made decisions about how to translate the text, but I would say leave it as it is. I think the 'thou shalt not' language of the KJV is firmly tied to the Ten Commandments in many people's minds.

Heh, didn't consider you poor sub-eds with your 20th Century spell-checkers when I was copying 16th Century words! smiley - sorry

No problem, Gif, I had a similar problem with one of my own entries - the part I quoted was from an US version, and somebody posted to EF to point out the 'wrong' speliing, so I thought I'd better make sure.
I take it that I can hand it back to the eds then?
