Name & History
Montenegro's name comes from two Venetian words, "monte negro" meaning "black mountain". Montenegro's native name, "Crna Gora", also means "black mountain". It was once a Serbian principality in the late Middle Ages & it gained its independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1878. From 1918, it was later a part of Yugoslavia. After Yugoslavia's break-up, it was a part of a smaller nation named also, "Yugoslavia". In 2003, Yugoslavia changed its name into Serbia & Montenegro. It was then in mid-2006 that Montenegro became a seperate independent nation.
