Wisbech the birthplace of Thomas Clarkson, who was a leading light in the anti slavery movement, but someone History seems to have overlooked. In Wisbech there is a very large monument to Thomas Clarkson, also in the Town Peckover House, the house that belonged to the person who started off the National Trust, and Elgood's brewery.
Wisbech is pronounced WISBEECH, although some round here do say WISBECK. The name seems to come from a Saxon chief and the river (Beck). There was once a Norman Castle in the town, this was pulled down, and a house stands in it's place.
The Town boasts that it is 'The Capital of the Fens'. as it is placed very much in the Fens, a former marshy grounds. Long since drained, to leave some very rich soil. Thus crop growing is very important to the area.
Wisbech was once a very busy port, but the river Nene silted up, and the port has lost it's importance, although some larger ships still come to the Town. The town has tried in recent years with some sucess to attract Yatchts to the yatch harbour.
At present more building is going on round the Town in an effort to attract more interest from the outside
