Hillsborough Tradegy

On the Saturday 15 April 1989, thousands of Liverpool fans made their way to Sheffield on what was hoped to be a joyous trip to Hillsborough Stadium. The occassion was Liverpools 17th FA Cup semi-final the opposition on the day Nottingham Forest.

As kick off time approached there were still hoards of fans milling around outside the Leppings Lane end, somehow a gate was opened and the fans all milled in. At 6 minutes past three fans had started to climb over the security fencing looking for someone toe do something, play carried on for a few minutes. BBC TV went live to the scene and initial reports suggested hooligans1, however it soon became clear that this was far worse and not an act of hooliganism. There was no way through the fencing and fans started to make streachers from the advertising hoardings. As more and more fans were pulled from the Leeping Lane stand.

95 people lost their lives that day, and the Shankly Gatesat Anfield2 became a shrine within hours. Flowers and scarves were left at the Kop and in the goal mouth. Over the next few weeks every funeral was attended by some of the players and the manager Kenny Daglish made a large number personally.

This tragedy lead to a major review of Ground safety. The doing away with security fencing in Britain. The all seater stadium. Hopefully such a tradegy will never happen again.

This page is dedicated to the 95 who lost their lives that afternoon. May you Never Walk Alone.
