Wissant (France)
Created | Updated May 19, 2005
The area around Wissant is some kind of a holiday paradise for lovers of cement, concrete and military history. It´s hard to throw a stone without hitting a bunker. The coastline was part of the Atlantic Wall. The Nazis expected the Allies to land their invasion there. Some of the smaller and bigger bunker-constructions are made up for sight-seeing and guided tours. So is the “Batterie Todt” - the biggest bunker in the area. It is situated directly near Wissant and was named after the construction specialist Todt.
The small village has about four or five restaurants and bars. At many working places in Germany there are signs meant to be funny, saying: “I´m at work – not on an escape”, you wouldn´t find them in France – the fact is commonly known. Advice: relax and enjoy – you are on holiday and not at work. Diner time is about 19:00 and closing time round about 23:00 hours.
If you are a real turning-nighttime-into-daytime-hip-party-people you have to go to the “Sunwave-Bar” directly at the promenade. At good days it is opened up to 23:30. They´ve got billiards, both kinds of music (country and western) and a big, big window with a direct view on the sea.
At the “Le Dauphin” (round the corner of the dolphin-monument, at the promenade) there is a TV-Set – just in case you have to watch soccer or Le Tour de France.
Furthermore there are three chips shops in town. The ones who should know, say that there is one best. Our testgroup found out that the inhabitants of Wissant think of words like “small”, “shrivelled”, “fatty” and “cold” when they talk about good chips.
The price for 0,25 litre beer is about 2,40 Euro in every bar (in July 2004).
The local camping place is surprisingly large. So under circumstances you have to walk a bit. The toilets and showers are quite o.k. for XY-Chromosomatics. The smarter, early-to-rise, not-seduced-by-bad-habits-and-manners and equipped-with-multi-tasking-abilities sex will be likely to prefer the sanitary facilities situated next to the entrance.
Boulognes-sur-Mer is close-by and worth a visit.
