Can you survive a lift crash?

1 Conversation

Ok I've been thinking and thinking about this and I don't care if it makes me weird. Say that you were in a lift and it happened to be that chance in a billion where the cable snapped and the emergency measures failed. Theoretically in this situation you could save your life. If you were to jump up and down while the lift was plummeting down to the bottom of the lift shaft you'd have a 50/50 chance of being in the air when it hit the bottom and therefore escaping fatal injuries. However, since this doesn't take into account pressure on the lift, the speed at which the lift is falling and the resulting damage of the crash to the lift I don't think it would work. Still it's something to think about.
Lesson to be learned: the only timeit's ok to jump up and down in a lift is if it's crashing anyway.
