They can be terribly intrusive, almost like someone running into my house shouting "Talk to me, I've got so much to say and it's very important". As such:
I have one provided by my place of work. Unless I am expecting a specific call, I keep it switched on silent. Once or twice a day I look at it to see if there are any missed calls and then plan my reponses to any messages that are left. I do not call back numbers which do not correspond with any verbal or SMS message.
I have no idea what my mobile phone number is. I have a big orange sticker on the back of my phone with the number printed on it.
I do not program in numbers unless they are important to me (wife, home). I do save some of the numbers of people who phone me regularly though so I can see at a glance who has called. If a missed call is just a number, it's probably unauthorised or unimportant to me.
I make calls whatever calls I need to make on the land line whenever possible.
My general philospohy is that if I am in the office, then I am quite possibly directly contactable by phone. Otherwise I am not, you can wait.
