A Conversation for Talking Point: Halloween
Understandable but deplorable

Not entirely, because the two events are locally organised by different sets of people.
Do we have a national psyche?
Deplorable. It's intrusive and unwanted.
No we shouldn't be encouraging begging, or demanding with menaces (as sometimes happens). Most children round our way are either with an adult or in large groups. Or too old to be cute.
No. Although there are a few people who put up decorations inviting callers.
No, I don't think the occult is really relevant to the way Halloween is celebrated these days.
No, I prefer a good firework display.
Health & safety and cost are the cause of less bonfire parties happening. There are still quite a few big organised shows. Begging 'a penny for the guy' is almost as bad as Halloween.
When I was small I enjoyed the excitement of getting wrapped up to go out in our back garden in the dark. My brother & I took turns in choosing the next firework from our modest box. Writing in the air with sparklers was fun. All traditions we carried on with our children, but I doubt that they will do the same if they have families.
Given that some people spoil things by using fireworks inappropriately, perhaps fireworks shouldn't be sold in the shops but only be available to organisations putting on a show. The way so many people use fireworks for celebrations throughout the year makes bonfire night less special as well as irritating all the neighbours!

PS I meant to add that I can understand why Halloween is so promoted by retailers because the merchandise can be targetted at children in a way that Bonfire night can't.
