Northampton, England, The World

Nothampton is situated half way between London and Birmingham on the M1 and was (and still is) famous for its shoes. However there are several other items of interest around the town.

This is the Exclusive area of Northampton, The address to have. Well its just outside of the town centre but it is nice and fairly quiet. this along with the fact that the house prices tend to be 6 figure, even for a terraced house. After that there appears to be little difference to any other part of the town. ( Mind you they do have a large park)
This is the Main shopping street all the high strreet names
2
. It also has a number of 'cheap' shops. At one point the councal ended the leases on all these shops to'tidy up the image of the town... now are empty shops really an improvement? p.s. I lost my job at the time because of this as well so my opinion is some what south of neutral!
Those that Haven't defected to the out of town shopping villages'.
If you travel to Northampton via the railway

then you will arrive at Castle station it is built un-surprisingly on the site of the old castle. Virtualy none of the Castle remain today though but what is left can be seen upon exiting the station on the main road into town. there are also some sections of wall that you can reach by walking towards the town and up onto the grass bank which over looks the station.
We're not on the main line. This is because when the railways were first being built the town eldars declared that 'they didn't want any of this new fangled thing and besides it would go out of fasion in a few years anyway. We were later allowed a loop connection with the main line
This was a testing tower for Express Lifts which was (and still is technicaly) the highest lift testing tower in the world. However they were taken over by OTIS in 1997/1998 and the site has since closed. The land has been sold to a developer to put houses on but the lift tower ( or as it has been refered to the Northampton Lighthouse

) Will be left alone.
UPDATE The developer, after trying (unsuccessfully) to persuade the people buying the houses to agree that they would pay for any/all repairs has now declared that the structure has what is called concrete cancer and had best come down. One of the conditions of sale was that, you've guessed it the tower is not demolished!.
2nd UPDATE English heritage has looked at the tower and pointed out that it could be saved with some simple work.
We're over 100 miles from the coast you figure it out !
This is a sort of 'Upper class' shopping center with the sort of shop that are nice to look at but not at the prices. Small and Bijou (As an estate agent would say - cosy) it has exits onto Abington Street and The Market Square.
This was the First rugby team for Northampton and was formed by the Choir boys from St James Church (see below). After a while a group of them decided that they didn't like the religon side of things and left to form the Heathens who are also still going today. The saints though boast several England players and are a force to be recond with in the First Division. They also now own the night club on the Weedon Road. It used to be Ritzy and befor that Cinderella Rockafella and even further back the Slipper (I'll have to take the parents word on this mind you but I never come over misty eyed when it crops up in conversation)
This is the main pub road for Northampton with more pubs per square inch than any other Road. The run starts at the Danny Boys and then moves onto The Racehorse, Mollys Bar, Penny Whistle, The (Irish) Center, Punch and Judy, Fidler Maguires, The Spread Eagle, Cock and Bull, The Gardeners Arms, The Old House at Home, Sir Pickering Phipps, Metros, Monks Park WMC, The crown and Cushion and finally ending with The Abington Park Hotel (My Local). It also has most of the Adult book shops for the Town where you can go and puchase many "fine art publications" and other such Items. I mentioned this as it took me awhile before I figured out why the martial (marital) arts shop had boards on the windows.
We're still a town pending two more attempts, the first this year and another in two years time to be given city status, and all because we made shoes for the runners up in the civil war!
