<P> Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was born in 1881 in Solonica, which is now part of Greece. He was simply known as Mustafa at that time, his other names would come later. His father, Ali Riza, a customs offical turned lumber merchant, died when Mustafa was very young. His mother, Zubeyde was left to raise him and his sister alone.</P>
<P> Mustafa began his schooling at a religious school, and later switched to a more modern, secular one. In 1893 he entered a military high school. Mustafa was an excelent student, this prompted his mathematics teacher to give him the name Kemal<FOOTNOTE> meaning perfection in Turkish</FOOTNOTE>.</P>
