Created | Updated May 18, 2004
Roanoke, Virginia is located midway between New York, NY and Atlanta, GA on Interstate 81, 168 miles west of the state capital, Richmond, VA. It has the second largest neon star in the world. .The Star is 88.5 feet tall and sits 1045 feet above the city on the top of Mill Mountain and can be seen for 50 miles away. It was built in 1949 as a Christmas decoration. Mill Mountain as it turns out is entirely in the Roanoke City Limits. So Roanoke is the "Only City with a Mountain Within Its Limits. "
