That sounds like a very phsychological question,
one which, I expect, people have had millions
of attempts at answering.
(The answer probably isn't 42)
The worst ones being from the theory of evolution
We are told we are evolved from slime
that was created from a big bang which happened
to bring the Universe into existance.
This explanation of course has always caused the
upset of the entire Human population, and people
start to think if we are a mere accident then
what is the point of behaving nicely to each other.
I prefer to think that God created the Earth and
come on its far more probable than evolution plus
there has been tons of evidence that the events in
the bible actually happened. The evidence for
evolution has been proven inaccurate or wrong many
times but nobody wants to listen.
