Fremont, California, USA

0 Conversations

Fremont is located just south of San Francisco Bay, in California, USA. Fremont has no unusual landmarks other than frequent mudslides in the surrounding hills into the homes of rich people.* It has a population of roughly 400,000 people, and was founded by the joining of several smaller cities. Fremont is largely populated by rich retirees and immigrants working in San Jose for technology companies. Housing costs are high, but homes are readily available. There is little pollution or urbanization, crime is average, and there is a rather good school system, complete with local college.

Entertainment

To those who live in Fremont, it is commonly called "a suburban wasteland". If one is looking for a good time, one would be better off stopping at the nearby cities of San Jose or San Francisco.

There is very little of interest to do in Fremont. There is a large movie theater, quite a few large shopping centers, and several nearby shopping malls, but these can only be expected to keep one occupied until 1: You run out of money, or 2: You've seen every good movie and have been to every chain store you can stand. The shopping malls and centers would be entertaining for a longer period of time, but they are filled exclusively with large chain stores such as Starbucks, Barnes and Noble, Wal-Mart and the like. They therefore have little or no interest beyond the first 5 minutes.

School for the Deaf

Fremont is not a total loss, however. It is one of the world centers for the deaf, being home to the famous Fremont School for the Deaf. American sign language is taught alongside Spanish and French in the schools. Indeed, one is quite likely to see people conversing in sign language in the course of a normal day. The deaf are easily and wholly integrated into society, and many major stores have interpreters for them.

Culture

Fremont is also haven for hundreds of other cultures, the majority being Japanese, Chinese and Indian (more commonly known as Sikh, for their religion). At last cataloguing, there were over 200 distinct languages being spoken fluently in the schools of Fremont. Fremont is home to one of the first multiplex theaters dedicated solely to foreign films. In fact, at the current rates of immigration, the typical "white American" will soon be in minority.

Most immigrants are coming to Fremont for jobs in technology. While Fremont has little of this industry in itself, it is near the dominant San Jose, which is deep in the heart of silicon valley.* Due to this large amount of commute from Fremont, it is home to what is currently the southernmost tip of BART.*

Survival Tips

  • Never make any racist remarks of any sort in public.
  • Don't bother looking for fun, there isn't any.
  • Don't talk to a parent of a student in Mission High School about your own child/children who are high school students. You risk a self-righteous lecture.
  • Pack a snack for the traffic signals.
  • Get a map. Many of the major streets curve around and cross each other twice or more, along with other oddities in street planning. Watch for hard to see street numbers as well.
  • Look out for large cars driven by rich people on cellular phones.
